By the Sea gives small glimpses into an underwater world. Instead of arranging the embroidered sea creatures in a formal grid, the quilt lets them drift through the surface, surrounded by curved blue-green shapes that suggest bubbles, currents, and tidepool movement.
The embroidered motifs are set into circular frames throughout the quilt. Fish, crab, turtle, octopus, seahorse, dolphin, jellyfish, and other marine creatures appear at different points across the design, so the eye moves from one small scene to the next. The surrounding patchwork is deliberately soft and fluid: aqua, teal, blue, sea green, and gray circles overlap and travel across the light cream background.
The black diamond accents add a sharper graphic note. They break up the softer ocean palette and give the composition a more modern rhythm, keeping the quilt from reading as a simple novelty or nursery piece. The quilting continues that sense of motion, with swirling stitched lines moving across both the background and the pieced areas like eddies in water.
At 68″ x 80″, By the Sea can be used as a large throw, lap quilt, twin coverlet, or decorative wall hanging. It is made with 100% cotton fabric and cotton fill, with a blue reverse side, and is machine washable.
