Zanzibar began with a very graphic idea: repeated square blocks that behave almost like pathways. Each block has its own internal movement, but when the blocks are placed together, the white lines start to connect across the surface and create a larger visual rhythm. The result is part maze, part window grid, part modern patchwork composition.

The batik fabrics give the quilt its color and personality. Teal, turquoise, plum, purple, navy, gold, rose, coral, and earthier taupe tones appear throughout the layout, shifting from block to block rather than settling into a predictable repeat. Some areas feel deep and saturated; others are lighter and more atmospheric. That variation keeps the quilt active without losing the strong geometric structure.

The white sashing holds the design together. It creates contrast against the batiks, sharpens the square-within-square layout, and gives the quilt a clean architectural quality. From a distance, Zanzibar reads as a bold modern queen quilt. Up close, the individual fabrics add the softer mottled texture and color movement typical of batiks.

At 96″ x 96″, this is a generous queen-sized quilt with enough scale for the full design to be seen on a bed. The materials are natural fibers: cotton fabric with wool fill. The cotton gives the quilt a familiar textile surface, while the wool fill adds warmth and light loft.

Zanzibar is a modern geometric quilt: structured, colorful, and design-forward, but still unmistakably handmade. It is a good example of how a repeated block can create order while individual fabric choices keep the finished quilt from feeling mechanical.
