Night Moves began with a simple visual idea: a crisp white geometric lattice floating over black, punctuated by blocks of saturated color. At 98″ x 98″, the finished quilt is large enough for a Queen bed, but the scale also gave me room to let the repeated structure develop across the entire surface rather than reading as a collection of individual blocks.
The color placement moves through orange, green, blue, pink, red, and purple, with each colored block built from two related shades. Against the black background, those colors stay vivid without overwhelming the white lattice. One of my favorite effects is visible from a distance: although the white elements are pieced from straight-edged squares and rectangles, the repeated pattern begins to read almost as curves.
Quilting needed to support that effect rather than compete with it. I stitched in the ditch around the white and colored sections, then used continuous curved quilting through the black spaces. The curves soften the strongly geometric piecing and give the black field texture while remaining intentionally subtle. Wool batting adds enough loft to make those quilting lines visible in changing light without making the quilt heavy.
A 3-inch black outer border lets the design continue visually almost to the edge, finished with a narrow pewter-gray binding. The back is also dark: a black cotton print scattered with multicolored dotted bursts that echoes the colors on the front without repeating the front design.
Night Moves measures 98″ x 98″ and is made with all-cotton fabrics and wool batting.
